Audi R8C - Inside look by PAN_NULLO

By Johan Laubscher

Before the launch of the Audi R18, the Audi R8C was the first and only closed-roof Le Mans prototype racer from Audi. The car was developed for the 1999 Le Mans 24 Hours. Audi Sport UK (Apex Motorsport) ran two of these cars. The short development time doomed the ill-fated R8C cars, but they did look beautiful on track.

Antonio Pannullo’s blog, also known as PAN_NULLO, produces brilliant technical content on Sports Prototype racing. His latest post features the Audi R8C with some great drawings and facts. The post is well worth a look, as well as the other content on offer at his blog via the link below.

Bonafede’s accelerated learning curve - Audi S4

Gennaro Bonafede Press Release

Rising star Gennaro Bonafede’s learning curve in class A of the ultra competitive Bridgestone Production Car championship continued at Cape Town’s picturesque Killarney circuit.

Having started the year racing in class T in the Ferodo liveried Volkswagen Golf 6 GTI, the initial plan was to move up to class A in 2013. When the ex Johan Fourie Audi S4 was acquired in August the team was encouraged by testing but also realised how different the two cars were. After careful consideration, Bonafede and race engineer Vic Maharaj decided there was nothing to lose by abandoning his championship hopes in favour of class A. The fact that Melvill Priest’s Audi is also prepared by the VMP team made the decision a bit easier.

“The cars require such different driving techniques and testing the Audi between racing the Golf would not have achieved the desired results. We gave it a lot of thought, but in the end realised the only way forward was to concentrate on the Audi. It’s a pity as I was winning races in the Golf, but I’m sure it was the right decision,” said the lanky Bonafede who is an official Monster Energy athlete.

At Killarney an engine problem put paid to Friday’s practice so set-up for Saturday’s qualifying was pretty much a guess and he was only ninth fastest. Nevertheless his confidence for the opening race was high, but as cars assembled on the grid, the heavens opened.

Bonafede rose to the occasion with a mature performance that belied his age and came home fourth. “Considering we only had 5 laps of practice on the Friday in a new car around that circuit. The fact that we were right at the front and in the mix in the rain is a big positive for me, I felt I could've challenged the Audi's in front of me but didn't want to risk being ‘that guy who took out the championship leader’; that would not have been cool.”

In race two he was holding third place when an unusual problem reared its head. The 22-year old has size 12 feet and under braking for turn 1 on lap six he managed to press both brake and accelerator at the same time and he slithered off into the wall and dropped to eighth. “It was completely my fault… Under pressure I made a crucial mistake. The pedals are pretty close to each other and there’s little margin for error.  Vic Maharaj mentioned they definitely have to re-position the pedals before the next race.”

Race three was brief as he was caught up in opening lap pile-up at turn two. “From where I was it looked like Etienne Van der Linde went in too hot and collided with Tschops Sipuka. As I was behind Etienne, I didn't really have anywhere to go and with the speed I was coming in I had no chance of missing Tschops. It was unfortunate because I think our set-up would have resulted in good pace in that race,  possibly enough to secure a 3rd overall for the day. I will learn from all of this and take it as another step on the flight of stairs to the top.”

The final round of the Bridgestone Production Car championship takes place at the Wesbank Super Series event at Kyalami on 27th October.

Video: Audi TT RS at the Nürburgring Nordschleife

By Tarek Ramchani

The Audi TT RS was introduced in the late 2010 season to compete in the VLN Endurance Series and the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. Both are run on the demanding and legendary Nordschleife. The car is factory built from the Audi subsidiary, quattro GmbH. This race version of the TT RS is powered by a 2.5L five-cylinder engine which produces around 340 bhp, very close to the street legal car. Competing in the SP4T class in VLN, it was team Raeder Motorsport who took charge of developing and racing the car for the first time. In 2011 the car even won a VLN round overall ahead of much more powerful and faster GT3 cars from the top SP9 class.

Here is a great onboard lap around the Green Hell with the TT RS driven by Audi legend, Frank Biela.

Audi takes lead in the DTM manufacturers’ championship

Audi Press Release

  • Best brand before the finale at Hockenheim
  • Impressive Audi team performance at Valencia
  • First podium for Adrien Tambay, first points for Rahel Frey

Ingolstadt/Valencia, September 30, 2012 – The aim has been achieved: In the Spanish DTM round at Valencia, Audi took the lead in the manufacturers’ championship with an impressive team performance and is now traveling to the grand finale at the Hockenheimring (October 21/live on “Das Erste”) with a 31-point advantage.

In front of 24,000 spectators (throughout the weekend) the Audi drivers were among the protagonists of a turbulent race held at significantly higher temperatures than those prevailing on the two days of practice and qualifying. At times, all eight Audi A5 DTM cars were running in the points. In the end, Audi with positions two, three, four, five and seven, scored 61 points for the manufacturers’ championship and is now heading the standings with 327 in front of Mercedes-Benz (296) and BMW (286).

In the end, the youngest member of the Audi squad was the best driver of an Audi A5 DTM: Adrien Tambay, the merely 21-year-old son of former Formula One driver Patrick Tambay, in the Audi ultra A5 DTM of Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline drove a flawless race which he finished as the runner-up behind the winner, Augusto Farfus. “I’m totally bushed but overjoyed,” said the Frenchman after his first podium finish in the DTM. “This is the greatest moment in my career so far. I gave everything and was rewarded with second place – unbelievable! It was a brilliant overall result for Audi today and my team performed fantastic pit stops. I want to thank everyone for this!”

With Mattias Ekström (Red Bull Audi A5 DTM), two drivers from Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline mounted the podium. The Swede, also thanks to a good strategy by his team, managed to improve from position eight on the grid to third place and, after his two victories in 2010 and 2011, was on podium for the third consecutive time at Valencia.

Positions four and five went to Filipe Albuquerque (TV Movie Audi A5 DTM/Audi Sport Team Rosberg) and Mike Rockenfeller (Schaeffler Audi A5 DTM/Audi Sport Team Phoenix). Albuquerque lost valuable time when a hose got caught in the wheelhouse of his car during the first pit stop.

A small sensation was caused by Rahel Frey (E-POSTBRIEF Audi A5 DTM). The Swiss advanced into the points at an early stage of the race, subsequently drove BMW driver Dirk Werner into making a mistake and in a spectacular duel even prevailed over the multiple World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx. Taking seventh place, she was the first woman to score points in a DTM car of the new generation. At the same time, her result meant that all eight Audi drivers have finished in the points this year.

The driver who suffered major misfortune in the race was Edoardo Mortara. The Italian from Audi Sport Team Rosberg was running in second place from the outset but was forced to park his Playboy Audi A5 DTM eight laps before the end of the race because he was no longer able to shift. Timo Scheider (AUTO TEST Audi A5 DTM/power transmission) and Miguel Molina (Red Bull Audi A5 DTM/brakes) retired while running in promising positions.

“We’ve achieved the aim we set for this weekend and taken the lead in the manufacturers’ championship,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich in summing up the results. “We were very strong here at Valencia on the whole and at times had all eight cars running in the points. It’s a shame that Edo (Mortara), Timo (Scheider) and Miguel (Molina) retired. I’m particularly happy for Adrien (Tambay), who clinched a podium right in his first DTM season, and for Rahel (Frey), who scored her first points in an impressive battle.”
