Phoenix Racing R8 LMS ultra on the yearbook cover
The 2012 Nürburgring 24 Hours was a great race for Audi. The first ever overall victory for the Inglostadt brand with a fantastic 1-2 victory. Audi Sport Team Phoenix came first with the Bilstein backed #3 R8 LMS. Behind the wheel it was Marc Basseng, Markus Winkelhock, René Rast and Christopher Haase. Mamerow Racing, a privateer Audi entry, finished in a very strong second.

The 2012 edition was a great event which was well attended despite a clash with the DTM series that weekend. As ever there was a very large starting grid of the impressive quality field. The Audi victory wasn't easy at all.

Today the official 2012 Nürburgring 24 Hours yearbook was released. A very detailed review with 240 pages about the Nordschleife classic. All the information, teams, drivers and more are fully detailed with great photos. And of course the victorious Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra is on the cover.

Audi looks forward to Japan premiere‏

Audi Press Release

  •          World Endurance Championship takes Audi to Japan for the first time
  •          Battle for title remains open after one-two victory in Bahrain
  •          Four Audi drivers with long-standing ties to Japan

Ingolstadt, October 5, 2012 - After the fifth victory of the season in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), Audi is traveling to Japan with eager anticipation. At the seventh of the season’s eight rounds on October 14, the factory team will be celebrating its racing debut in the Asian island state. The challenging Fuji circuit southwest of Tokyo is the venue for the next battle of the Audi factory drivers who are in contention for the drivers’ championship.

The Le Mans winners Marcel Fässler/André Lotterer/Benoît Tréluyer enlarged their advantage over Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish by 6 to 13.5 points in the Bahrain heat race. With that, a title decision would be possible as early as in Japan but, with 52 points yet to be awarded, does not seem likely before the season’s finale at Shanghai.

After coping with air temperatures of more than 35 degrees in the Sakhir desert, the five drivers, in the middle of October, will be in for more or less changeable weather conditions at the venue that is within a viewing distance of Mount Fuji. Rain and clearly lower temperature are often on the agenda in the region at this time of year. With its unusually banked turns and rather untypical radii, the 4.563-kilometer track poses a special challenge. André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer are the drivers who are most familiar with the Fuji circuit. The German relocated his career to Japan in 2003 and the Frenchman has spent as many as twelve years of his life as a racer in the Far East. Tom Kristensen spent several seasons driving in the Land of the Rising Sun in the nineties and Allan McNish has a large number of test and race kilometers there under his belt as well. Only Marcel Fässler has never been to Japan.

Both squads are again relying on the Audi R18 e-tron quattro. The heat in Bahrain was deemed to be the ultimate thermal test for Audi’s first hybrid sports car. The third victory of the season clinched by the innovative prototype a week ago clearly underscores the fortes of its engineering design.

To the delight of many sports car fans, Toyota has evolved into a particularly strong opponent in the World Endurance Championship since June and is competing on its home track at Fuji. Audi, on the other hand, has never competed in Japan with a factory-level commitment. The brand with the four rings enjoys growing support by Japanese racing fans nonetheless. They accompanied a race of the Goh privateer team at Suzuka in the 2002 season with the legendary Audi R8 LMP sports prototype and have been turning out for customer-level commitments with the Audi R8 LMS GT3 sports car since the past season.

On television, fans can watch the last 90 minutes of the race on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. (CEST) on Eurosport. Like at all WEC rounds, Audi is offering comprehensive coverage to the spectators at home: www.audi-liveracing.com will broadcast the race for six hours on the internet and also offer cockpit camera perspectives, telemetry data and summary reports of the race. The Audi Sport iPhone and Android apps provide WEC coverage on smartphones with live tickers, news, pictures and results. In addition, Audi’s racing fan community is kept up to speed on Facebook and Twitter.

Topics of the weekend

-Will Audi manage to clinch its sixth victory of the season on its Japan debut?
-Will the long-standing Japan racers André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer have a track advantage?
-How strong will be the response of Japanese fans to the WEC debut in their country?
-Will the decision in the battle for the drivers’ World Championship be made as early as at the penultimate round?

Quotes by the officials

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport):
"We’re looking forward to the race at Fuji. It’ll be held in completely different conditions than the past round. Instead of the high temperatures and desert sun I’m expecting around ten degrees less and changeable conditions. Two of our drivers - André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer - have an enormous wealth of experience at Fuji. I’m hoping for us to be able to show a similarly strong performance in Japan as in Bahrain."

Ralf Jüttner (Technical Director Audi Sport Team Joest):
"Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer are traveling to Japan with a relatively comfortable advantage. If our cars had finished in reverse order in Bahrain our two driver squads would only have been separated by half a point. The battle remains thrilling. André and Benoît know the track well because they’ve got many years of experience in Japan. I’m looking forward to a nice battle between our cars and a fierce competition with Toyota."

Facts and quotes by the Audi drivers

Marcel Fässler (36/CH), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1

-Celebrated his third victory of the season in Bahrain together with his team-mates
"I’ll be competing in Japan for the first time and have heard a lot about the country from my team-mates. I only know the race track from the simulator though. My team-mates André and Ben have a large Japanese fan community. I’m very much looking forward to the ambience and the Japanese culture."

André Lotterer (30/D), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1

-Has been racing in Japan since 2003 and lives in Tokyo
-Is the leader of the standings together with his team-mates
"Fuji is almost a home round for me because I’ve been racing in Japan for nearly ten years and am still competing in Formula Nippon there. My team-mate Benoît Tréluyer and I’ve got a large number of fans in Japan. Japanese spectators love endurance racing. The fact that Ben and I were always running there as rivals and are now competing together for Audi makes for a very special situation. The race will be a real humdinger."

Benoît Tréluyer (35/F), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1
-Spent twelve years of his racing career in Japan
"I’m really excited about Japan. I’ll be arriving a little earlier in order to meet many friends and acquaintances from my days as a racer in Japan. I celebrated a large number of victories at Fuji and even lived very close to the track for two years. Now I can hardly wait to be back again."

Tom Kristensen (45/DK), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2
-Celebrated his sports car debut in Japan 20 years ago
-Spent several years of his career in the Land of the Rising Sun
"I love being in Japan. I spent an important part of my career there. From 1992 to 1995, I was regularly driving in Japan and sporadically again in 1996. I celebrated my sports car debut there as well, as team-mate to Eddie Irvine and Jacques Villeneuve. And I also won the Le Mans 24 Hours for the Japanese Team Goh once. I’ve got very close ties to the country and its people and owe them a lot. Now I’m returning to Japan with Audi and Audi Sport Team Joest. Back in those days I was living in Gotemba and now we’re racing at Fuji, just a few kilometers away from there. I’m basically familiar with the track but the modified final section is new to me too."

Allan McNish (42/GB), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2

-Most recently set the fastest time in qualifying in Bahrain
-Has run several times in Japan during his career
"I’ve spent a lot of time in Japan as a racer, for instance as a Formula 1 test driver in the nineties, then as a sports car driver and again in Formula 1. I’m expecting the fans to show a really positive response to the Fuji 6 Hours. I’m familiar with the new track layout which I came to know at the wheel of an Audi R8 V10. The circuit has retained a lot of its traditional characteristics. The first part is fast and fluid and the last one very technical and difficult with a lot of camber change and general elevation change as well. This section of the track can heavily influence the race result, both due to the vehicle set-up and the time loss when lapping other cars. The weather at Fuji is unpredictable in October. When it rains in this mountain region it pours."

André Lotterer about Fuji:
"At first glance, Fuji looks easy, but it’s not easy to drive at all. For the 1.5-kilometer straight, you need only little aerodynamic drag and a lot of downforce for the fast corners. The first right-hand turn is very narrow. It’s followed by a fast left-hander - the A-Corner - which is a real challenge. This section merges into the long 100 R where various lines and apices are possible. It’s fast and you’ve got a view of Mount Fuji. Next is a hairpin. You’ve got to do a good job of accelerating out of this turn onto the long, slightly bent uphill straight up to a narrow chicane. The most challenging section comes last: an off-camber right-hand turn, followed by two left-handers with hard to find apices, and then there’s another right-hander. I like the track. Slipstream often plays a major role there."

A closer look at The Arc Audi Racing Program with Don Istook

By Johan Laubscher

In North America the Istook name is synonymous with being on the side of an Audi racer. Don Istook is an Audi racing legend. He has built and competed with Audi race cars for decades. 2012 was an exciting year for Don and his team. They acquired the first Audi TT RS in North America and turned it into a stunning white race car. The 2012 campaign focussed on the SCCA World Challenge GTS class where the team enjoyed much success in a very competitive field.

As the 2012 SCCA World Challenge season came to an end more exciting news emerged from the team. After running one Audi TT RS in the World Challenge this year, the Arc Audi Racing Program will return in 2013 with two of these beautiful TT RS race cars. This is very exciting news for North American Audi fans. The team also welcomes any new potential sponsors to join the campaign.

Amongst the World Challenge commitments Don and the TT RS were also seen at other SCCA Regional events. Development continued steadily during the year as the TT RS was further improved. At the close of the 2012 World Challenge season the team got ready for the SCCA National Runoffs, the premier event for the Nationals held at Road America. It was a great showing as Don drove the TT RS to a top ten result finishing in seventh place of the STU class. The top ten result is even more impressive as Don started from pitlane and proceeded to storm through the race, passing more than half of the field.

With the racing season nearing its end the team have another event on the calendar. They have been invited by Pirelli to participate in the grand opening of the new Circuit of the Americas Formula One track in Austin, to be held on 21 October 2012. It will be very exciting to see the TT RS putting down a few laps at this new race circuit.

Along with bringing the TT RS to the racing scene in North America, Istook’s Motorsport has also been involved with a very special project. The team have been supporting The Arc, a national organisation for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Running under the entry name of The Arc Audi Racing Program, the team employs crew members with disabilities to show what they are capable of, and to be part of a professional racing team. The Arc also sends a group of members to the race meetings to introduce them to the team and its crew.

Don Istook is also venturing into another new adventure as he prepares to launch a new business venture called RS Werkes. The new business line will focus on the Audi RS and S performance cars.

The Arc Audi Racing Program has been an extremely exciting program to follow during the 2012 season. With two cars on the grid next year this program will grow from strength to strength and we wish the team all the best for their future successes.

Audi R8 LMS Ultra - Pure Sound

By Tarek Ramchani

The Audi R8 LMS ultra isn't only a victorious car but it also produces a beautiful exhaust note. One of the best to hear in the world of Grand Touring cars. The 5.2L V10 is nearly a production based one, and here in the R16 it sounds brilliant. Here is the proof from Circuit Zolder, which hosted the Belgian round of the FIA GT1 World Championship. Just watch and listen.

The Martini brand has always been linked to motorsport. Unforgettable liveries on factory Porsches at Le Mans and Lancias in the World Rally Championship. Martini has also been seen in the former Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft or simply DTM with Alfa Romeo in the mid 1990s. More than a decade later and Martini is back in the German series, with a fictional artwork render. Here it is in Forza Motorsport 4, and the Audi A4 DTM the chosen car. The legendary white, red and blue livery perfectly matches the victorious R14 machine from Audi Sport.

Audi lets you be the Le Mans hero

By Johan Laubscher

Audi was well represented at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. Various new models were on display, thrilling the public. Among all the new cars and promotions there was one extremely clever idea from Audi. Titled The Audi Le Mans Experience, it was an activity were an iPad was used to take a photo of a person. The photo, along with the person’s name and national flag were then incorporated into a very clever two minute video. All the videos are identical but for the difference in the person’s photo and the name that appears in the intro, on the actual car, race broadcast and the Audi Magazine.

Your name on the #1 Audi R18
The video portrays the person driving the #1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro at Le Mans 2012. Wisely chosen camera work and commentary that is all in the third person, ensures a enjoyable video which shows the person in question driving like a champion at Le Mans to come back from a problem and win the race overall. All the videos are uploaded onto the official YouTube channel where the person can view his victorious success at the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours.

Both Mr George Achorn from Fourtitude and Mr Joshua Decker from QuattroWorld took part in this activity. We must admit, the videos look amazing. It was a very clever initiative by the marketing team at Audi. Enjoy watching Fourtitude and QuattroWorld take victory in the videos below:

APR Motorsport Press Release

Norman and von Moltke Finish Second and Norman is Crowned Rolex Series Rookie of the Year

October 2, 2012 (Opelika, Ala.) – APR Motorsport, with drivers Dr. Jim Norman and Dion von Moltke, capped the first year of competition for the Audi R8 in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series by finishing second in the GT class at the series’ season finale on Saturday at Lime Rock Park. After a challenging season in which the team developed the Audi R8 Grand-Am, it would score its best result in dramatic fashion at the final race of the year.

Norman made up several positions at the start of the race, before handing the car over to von Moltke in 10th position. While battling for position, von Moltke spun exiting turn three with the Audi making contact with two other cars. Luckily, the Audi sustained only cosmetic damage and von Moltke was able to rejoin the race.

With a long green-flag portion through the middle of the race, the APR Motorsport crew made the decision to pit von Moltke for fuel at the earliest moment that would ensure the car would make it to the finish. As a result, von Moltke went down a lap to the leading GT-class Porsche, but was able to get his lap back when the Porsche began saving fuel. A caution period with 25 minutes remaining would see the Audi cycle to third place when several other GT cars pitted under the caution.

Von Moltke took the final green flag in third place with lots of pressure from a chasing Ferrari F458 Italia. When the leading Porsche ran short of fuel with two laps remaining, the Audi was promoted to second place which von Moltke held to the checkered.

It was the first podium for Norman, von Moltke, APR Motorsport and the Audi R8 Grand Am in the Rolex Series.

“Wow! I could not imagine a much better way to have finished off our season,” said von Moltke. “This result was possible thanks to every single person on our team. The guys really dug deep and gave us absolutely flawless pit stops every time, and this was one of the main reasons we finished on the podium. No one got many laps before the race and Jim hopped right into our Audi R8 and was throwing down awesome laps in his stint. He gave me the car in a great position and really helped keep me pushing over the radio throughout my entire stint. Our engineer Mark Scott improved our car each stint and for the final 25 minute sprint to the finish the car was fantastic, and that’s what allowed me to keep pushing and hold off the Ferrari. This has been a very special year for me to work with Jim, APR and Audi, and I am so thankful that I was able to deliver them their first podium finish in the Grand-Am Rolex Series and I hope to help to deliver their first win in the series in the near future!”

© Mike Juergens www.quattroworld.com
For Norman, he not only scored his first Rolex Series podium, but was awarded the Rolex Series Rookie of the Year at the Rolex Series banquet on Monday night in New York City.

“Clinching the Grand-Am Rookie of the Year award is a great honor,” said Norman. “However, this would not have been possible without the tireless support of the APR team that made sure our amazing Audi R8 was safe and fast every single weekend. My co-driver Dion also gets a lot of credit for this award; it was an honor to be able to share this great car with such a wonderful driver, mentor, and friend. This has been a fantastic year and a great learning experience. I’m looking forward to next year when we win the GT championship for Audi!”

After entering GRAND-AM in 2008 in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series, APR Motorsport expanded to the Rolex Series as a development partner for Audi Sport. Scoring a podium to close out the season was validation for the team, which faced its share of challenges throughout the season. In addition to scoring a Rolex Series podium in its first season, APR Motorsport was a race winner in its fifth straight season in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

“To say this year has been a challenge would be an understatement,” said Stephen Hooks, President of APR Motorsport. “It took every member of our team to work through the night to get the car to the finish at Daytona, and it seemed like we never stopped working throughout the year. Lime Rock started the same way – Dion was trying really hard on old tires to stay near the front and spun right in front of a field of cars. But the car was okay – the Audi R8 is a very tough race car – and the way it worked out we were good on fuel at the end and all of a sudden battling for the podium. Finishing second is just unbelievable. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would end up on the podium at Lime Rock, but the crew gets all the credit for prepping the car and Dr. Jim and Dion for bringing it home. We are very excited now for next season.”
