Audi makes Sebring the ‘home of quattro’

Audi Press Release

  •          First race for the Audi R18 e-tron quattro in the USA
  •          Farewell event for LMP1 class with historic automobile exhibition
  •          Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich: “Emotional race weekend”

Ingolstadt, March 8, 2013 – It is a debut and a farewell at the same time: the Audi R18 e-tron quattro contests the 12-hour race at Sebring (Florida) in the USA for the first time on March 16 and, in doing so, makes the legendary racetrack ‘home of quattro’. At the same time, it is provisionally the LMP1 sports car’s final appearance in the North American endurance classic.

The race at Sebring is staged under special circumstances for Audi: the merger of the two U.S. championships, the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and GRAND-AM, sees new regulations coming into force from 2014. In the future, no Le Mans Prototypes (LMP) of the top category can compete in this race. As a result, events come full circle for Audi in Florida: in 1999, the brand’s first LMP sports car celebrated its premiere at Sebring – now two LMP1 sports cars with the four rings provisionally contest a race here for the final time. After Audi customer racing’s winning start to the season with the one-two finish for the Audi R8 GRAND-AM in the 24-hour race at Daytona, Audi now targets another victory in the USA – despite difficult conditions as the race cars from the American Le Mans Series enjoy several advantages with regard to weight and engine power.

In the 13 outings to date in the sports car classic at Sebring, Audi has claimed 22 podium finishes, including ten overall victories. Three Audi drivers, Michele Alboreto/Dindo Capello/Stefan Johansson, mounted the podium at the premiere on March 20, 1999. The Dane Tom Kristensen is the race’s most successful driver with six wins. Marco Werner holds the lap record at Sebring, the trio Dindo Capello/Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish the distance record.

Audi Sport Team Joest fields two Audi R18 e-tron quattro prototypes. The current World Endurance Champions and Le Mans winners Marcel Fässler (CH) and Benoît Tréluyer (F), who are supported by Oliver Jarvis (GB) at Sebring, drive an R18 from 2012. Lucas di Grassi (BR), Tom Kristensen (DK) and Allan McNish (GB) start in the new R18 e-tron quattro from 2013, which celebrates its race premiere at Sebring.

The Sebring raceverytrack is located on a former military airfield, which Audi transforms into the ‘home of quattro’ this year and therefore picks up the threads of a successful chapter of motorsport history: for the first time since 1989, when drivers like Hans-Joachim Stuck and Walter Röhrl raced from victory to victory with the Audi 90 quattro in the IMSA-GTO series, Audi Sport contests a factory event in the USA with a racecar equipped with four-wheel drive. The Audi R18 e-tron quattro is the first hybrid sports car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Its front wheels are powered electrically and thus make the R18 a special type of quattro.

Exhibition with winning cars highlighting Audi’s motorsport history

Audi traditionally uses its involvement in sport prototypes to test new technologies for future applications in production cars. The fans at Sebring can discover this for themselves by embarking on a journey in time through the brand’s previous sports car eras. The exhibition shows an Audi R8 (ALMS winner 2002), an Audi R10 TDI (Sebring winner 2007), an Audi R15 TDI (Sebring winner 2009) and an Audi R18 TDI (Sebring winner 2012).

In addition to the active factory drivers, the former Audi drivers and Sebring winners Frank Biela, Dindo Capello, Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner are also present and will be signing autographs, posing for photos and giving interviews for the fans. In this way, Audi thanks the passionate sports car fans in the USA for their long-standing loyalty to the brand. “Without a shadow of a doubt it’ll be an emotional race weekend for us because Sebring and its fantastic fans enjoy a very special status in both our motorsport and LMP history,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.”

In contrast to last year, the American Le Mans Series season opener is not a part of the FIA World Endurance Championship. The 2013 WEC season starts a month later on April 14 with the 6-hour race at Silverstone, Great Britain.

Topics of the weekend

- LMP1 sports cars bid farewell to Sebring
- First Audi factory event in the USA with quattro drive since the brand’s involvement in the IMSA-GTO Series in 1989
- Race debut for the further developed Audi R18 e-tron quattro
- Premiere of a hybrid racecar in the USA

Quotes by the officials

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport: “Sebring was always a fixed date in our motorsport calendar since the beginning of our sports car program in 1999. And justifiably so, as Sebring is a particularly hard racetrack. Hard and demanding for driver and machine – whoever survives this 12-hour race without problems is usually well equipped for every other challenge. The race will once again be the perfect dress rehearsal for the forthcoming WEC season and the 24-hour race at Le Mans.”

Ralf Jüttner (Technical Director Audi Sport Team Joest): “We travel to Sebring a little downhearted. It’s a real shame that LMP1 sports cars will not be allowed to start anymore in this legendary race. The race this year means some additional technical effort for us as we send two cars of different generations to the grid. It’s good, however, that we can test the further developed Audi R18 e-tron quattro in race conditions here. It’s always proved particularly beneficial in terms of preparing for the 24-hour race at Le Mans. We are happy to accept the extra effort for this.”

Facts and quotes from the Audi drivers

Marcel Fässler (36/CH), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
- First Swiss to win a World Championship title in car racing
- Competes for the third time at Sebring in a Le Mans Prototype
“Sebring is a very special race thanks to its tradition, atmosphere and the track’s unique character. I’ve raced here twice before, but haven’t been able to win so far. I want to change that this time around, especially as it’s probably the last chance we’ll get for a long time to fight for overall victory here with Audi.”

Oliver Jarvis (29/GB), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
- First race together with Le Mans winners Fässler and Tréluyer
- Competes for the second time in a race in America
- Won the GT class in an Audi R8 GRAND-AM at Daytona on his U.S. debut in January
“I was really happy when I got the call from Audi saying that I could race at Sebring. The race is one of the world’s greatest endurance classics. I’m particularly proud of being in a car with the two-time Le Mans winners Marcel Fässler and Benoît Tréluyer. I’m certain that I can learn a lot from them and hope that we will be successful together. I’m already convinced that this race will be a highlight in my career.”

Benoît Tréluyer (36/F), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
- Starts his fourth season with Audi
- Starts for the second time at Sebring after his debut last year
“Sebring is a special race – for several reasons: firstly, the many extremely enthusiastic fans make the atmosphere something very special. Secondly, it is difficult to find a perfect set-up for the car because the track is very bumpy and the surface changes constantly between concrete and different types of tarmac. The race is a big challenge for everybody. I’m looking forward to mastering it.”

Lucas di Grassi (28/BR), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
- First race at Sebring
- Second race for Audi (after WEC Brazil 2012)
“I’ve never been to Sebring, but I’ve heard from my team-mates that it is a fabulous race and the track is extremely demanding. This is why I’m excited, but also happy about having the same team-mates for my second outing as an Audi factory driver as I did for my debut in 2012 at Interlagos. Tom (Kristensen) and Allan (McNish) helped me a lot at that time and they’ll also support me this time with many valuable tips.”

Tom Kristensen (45/DK), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
- Record winner at Sebring with six overall victories to his name
- Starts his 14th season as Audi factory driver in Florida
“Nothing has changed at Sebring since the days of Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss. So, the challenge is the same as every year: to get through the traffic well, to hustle the car safely and quickly around the very bumpy track – and to win. The whole thing is obviously even more special as this could possibly be the final race in an Audi prototype at Sebring.”

Allan McNish (43/GB), Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2 (Audi Sport Team Joest)
- Shares a cockpit with Tom Kristensen at Audi since 2006
- Has mounted the Sebring podium seven times in his career
“It was really great news when I heard that Audi would also race at Sebring in 2013. After all, this race is an important part of Audi’s sports car history. That there is also a hint of goodbye hanging over the event gives the whole thing a special touch. Even more fans than usual will certainly come to the track to personally experience the end of an era. Just like the entire Audi team, I will also do my utmost to bid Sebring farewell with a win. This would make me very proud.”

Marcel Fässler about the Sebring circuit

“Compared to a modern European racetrack, Sebring is a relic from the 1960s. But the track gains enormously in character as a result: the concrete slabs of the old airfield are aligned in rows one after the next and have very noticeable gaps between them and even big steps. You have to be brave at the first and last corners. The first turn has a blind entry – the track width narrows down from about 20 to only eight meters here. You have to be careful of the big bump on the corner exit. It can be very tricky at night. In general the circuit is not very well illuminated, but luckily we have the full LED headlights on the Audi. This helps us a lot and I wouldn’t like to be without them.”

Audi-powered Nigerian team sign-up to British GT campaign

British GT Press Release

The Avon Tyres British GT Championship welcomes a sixth new team to the series this year in Team Nigeria Racing Eagle, a new racing project from the African continent, fielding an Audi R8 LMS in the GT3 category.

The project is the mastermind of Ribi Adeshokan, who has a desire to engage African people into motorsport and develop motorsport into an industry for Africa. After initial plans to run a team in the A1GP single-seater championship were halted when the series folded, Adeshokan investigated alternative options for the Nigeria Racing Eagle project.

Based on a number of factors, including the popularity of super cars with Africa’s more affluent community, GT racing and in particular GT3 seemed an obvious choice. This year the team appointed Leeds-based United Autosports as their technical partner, but plan to eventually have a wholly African team engineering the R8 LMS, with a mid-season move to an R8 LMS ultra already in preparation.

Drivers for the season include 26 year-old South African, Adrian Zaugg, and 29 year-old Cameroonian, Christian Ebong. Both drivers are in preparation for the season start at Oulton Park in just over a month on the Easter Weekend (30 March – 1 April).

Zaugg is the more experienced of the pair and comes to British GT following a successful single-seater career that has seen him race in Formula BMW, Formula Renault Cup, Renault World Series 3.5, GP2 and A1GP where he clinched three wins for Team RSA. The South African former Red Bull Junior Team driver is familiar with sports cars having contested five races of the 2012 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship with team Bonaldi Motorsport, taking three pole positions and a win at the last round at the Navarra circuit in Spain.

Ebong has had a number of outings in a Peugeot Spider 207 supporting the Le Mans Series, and regular outings in a Seat Leon in the DTM supporting German Seat Supercopa Championship. Prior to this, Ebong was successful in the French Rallycross Championship, becoming Vice Champion in his first season in 2001, and lifting the Championship title the following year. After a short break from racing to secure finances, Ebong returns to motorsport as a key part of the Nigeria Racing Eagle team.

Quotes
Ribi Adeshokan, Team Owner:
"Our vision is to use the British GT platform to engage with people of an African origin who are emotionally attached to Africa and have a sense of belonging and pride in their country. We want to introduce these people to motorsport and show those them that there is more to the sport than Formula 1. Ultimately we want them to take pride in our team and support us like they would an African sportsperson at the Olympics.  We’re also working on bringing British GT to African television as week seek to attract corporate sponsors, including international brands with interest in Africa or those wanting to establish themselves further in Africa, helping them to promote and market their brands. We are hugely excited at the prospect of racing in British GT and are focusing all of our energy on making this year a success for Nigeria Racing Eagle and for the African people

Benjamin Franassovici, Championship Manager:
“The arrival of Ribi and the Nigeria Racing Eagle team to British GT has been in discussion for some time now. They’re a serious team with an interesting proposition and a lot of energy and desire to succeed. The Audi will allow the team to establish themselves and understand how the series works, and in Adrian and Christian they have a promising driver line-up. Having teams from overseas such as AF Corse, Vita4one Team Italy and rhinos Leipert is a compliment to what we are trying to achieve here in the UK with British GT and Nigeria Racing Eagle brings interest from one of the most diverse continents in the world, something which can only benefit us as we strive to expand awareness of the series.”

Video: Australian GT Round 2 at Adelaide

By Johan Laubscher

Round two of the Australian GT Championship took place at Adelaide, acting as a support event for the Clipsal 500. Two Audis took part: The Audi R8 LMS ultra of Rod Salmon and the R8 LMS of Minda Motorsport. Ultimately it was a double top ten for Minda Motorsport as they finished eighth in both races. The weekend was over for Rod Salmon during the first race, a crash on the exit of turn eight resulted in the car being out for the weekend.

Other Side Productions has put together a very nice highlights video from the Adelaide weekend. It features a lot of footage and interviews with the drivers, including a video of the Salmon incident. Enjoy the race footage from the streets of Adelaide down under.

Video: Closer look at the Targa Audi TT RS

By Johan Laubscher

The Audi TT RS of Matt and Casey Close has become a formidable force in the Australian Targa Championship. These tarmac rally events always provide a great spectacle and the TT RS more than holds its own against a field of very potent competitors. The Close pairing have had a very good 2012-2013 season so far, as they are coming off a set of two consecutive second place finishes. This good speed and consistency puts them in a positive position ahead of the Targa Tasmania in April.

Other Side Productions have been producing great video coverage of the Targa Championship. They have just released another new video featuring a closer look at the TT RS and interviews with Matt Close. Enjoy, the sound from the five cylinder turbo engine sounds great on the Australian tarmac stages.

World Premiere in Geneva: Audi RS 5 DTM

Audi Press Release

  •          Audi Sport presents race touring car for the 2013 DTM season
  •          Close links to the sportiest Audi production models
  •          Jamie Green new team-mate of Mattias Ekström

Ingolstadt/Geneva, March 5, 2013 – At the International Motor Show in Geneva, Wolfgang Dürheimer, Member of the Board for Technical Development of AUDI AG, and Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich on Tuesday afternoon presented the racecar for the DTM 2013 – the Audi RS 5 DTM. The driver line-up for the new DTM season is also fixed.

“Motorsport is an integral part of the Audi DNA and is not an end in itself for our company,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer. “At the end of the day, our customers benefit from the victories on the racetracks, because we attach great value to technology transfer between motorsport and production. Our new Audi RS 6 Avant, which we present here in Geneva, is a prime example: it combines downsizing of the engine with significantly less weight. And where do you learn this? In motorsport.”

The technical specification of the DTM cars was ‘frozen’ in accordance with the regulations as the checkered flag fell at the last race of the 2012 season. Further development was only possible in extremely limited form. Over the winter, the Audi Sport DTM team concentrated on identifying if any of the 4,000 components in the racecar from the 2012 season offered any potential for optimization. “Our technicians proved to be quite resourceful in the process,” explains Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

The model name Audi RS 5 DTM is new. As a result, Audi establishes a direct reference in the DTM to the company’s successful production models. “The abbreviation ‘RS’ stands for the sportiest Audi models,” said Dr. Ullrich. “The performance data of the current RS 5 and RS 5 DTM are very similar. This is why we are of the opinion that both fit perfectly to one another.”

Eight Audi RS 5 DTM join the grid for the 2013 DTM. They are fielded by the three proven Audi Sport squads Abt Sportsline, Phoenix and Rosberg, which have reinforced in part by recruiting additional personnel. The allocation of the eight Audi factory drivers between the teams is now also fixed. Newcomer Jamie Green (Great Britain) is the new team-mate of two-time DTM Champion Mattias Ekström (Sweden) at Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. The 30-year old is regarded as one of the fastest and best DTM drivers of the modern era. He drove the new Audi RS 5 DTM onto the stage during the presentation. “I already feel at home here at Audi and can hardly wait to contest my first DTM race for the four rings,” said the Briton.

With a combined total of 25 race wins and two championship titles, Ekström and Green form the most successful driver combination in the entire DTM 2013 field. Nine DTM race wins unite the other Audi driver teams which have remained almost identical since the 2012 season: the double DTM Champion Timo Scheider (Germany) and Adrien Tambay (France) compete for Audi Sport Team Abt, Miguel Molina (Spain) and Mike Rockenfeller (Germany) for Audi Sport Team Phoenix, Filipe Albuquerque (Portugal) and Edoardo Mortara (Italy/France) for Audi Sport Team Rosberg.

The new DTM season starts on May 5 at the Hockenheimring. Ten events are on the 2013 agenda, six of them in Germany. On top of these six come races in Austria, Great Britain and the Netherlands and on August 4 the debut event at the Moscow Raceway in Russia. The Audi RS 5 DTM appears in action publically for the first time at the DTM test between April 26 and 29 at Barcelona (Spain) and from 9 to 12 April at Hockenheim, where a grandstand is open for spectators on the first day.
